Week 20: It’s the Service That Counts
Hello everyone! It's another beautiful day in Bikini Bottom. Things are going pretty good here in Phnom Penh. Just trying to find more people to help and teach every day. Last Sunday this random guy just walked into sacrament meeting, so we talked to him afterwards and were able to meet with him a couple of times this week which was great. He already has a strong love for Jesus Christ and when he met with us he said he would believe anything we taught him. Unfortunately, he is moving to North Carolina at the end of the month to live with his kid, but we're going to teach him as much as we can before he leaves. Then we'll send him over to some Elders in America and he'll go from there. He is a really great guy so maybe he'll start a Khmer branch in North Carolina or something! I know there are Elders somewhere waiting to baptize him.
Yesterday I gave a talk in sacrament meeting and was asked to speak about service. As I was preparing for it a little bit, I read this talk by President Monson called "The Joy of Service." In it, he talks about this young man who went to visit his grandma before she passed away. He even stopped his studies for a summer in order to spend time with his grandmother. President Monson told the young man that he would never regret his decision to spend that time with his grandmother. Then the young man said, "I chose to come because I love her and know this is what my Heavenly Father would have me do." This made me think of why we serve missions and serve others. We serve because we love Jesus Christ and we know it is what our Heavenly Father wants us to do. As we serve others every day, Jesus Christ should be our main reason. He is the answer to everything. Serving others is not only a way we can make people happy, but a way we can receive happiness ourselves. President Monson says,
"Fill your minds with truth.
Fill your hearts with love.
Fill your lives with service."
I did not use any of that in my talk (hahaha), but I really enjoyed reading it and wanted to share it.
Mosiah 2:17 "And behold, I tell you these things that ye may learn wisdom; that ye may learn that when ye are in the service of your fellow beings ye are only in the service of your God."
Always take any opportunity you have to serve others! Email me! I would love to hear from you guys. I love you all!
Love,
Elder Mendenhall
